Madras Week Celebrations

22nd August 2016 to 26th August 2016

Chennai celebrates its birthday every year on August 22nd to commemorate the founding of the city. The week of 22nd August to 26th August is celebrated as Madras week through such events as heritage walks, exhibitions, food festivals and public talks.

In a small way, we at NPS International Chennai, also celebrate the Madras week every year.

This year our celebrations commenced on 22nd, by a special assembly for grades 1 to 4, with a talk on the significance of the day by our faculty members, followed by sharing of some interesting facts about Chennai by students of grade 8.

Day 2- saw the assembly for grades 5 to 10, with the programmes on talk about Chennai, facts and also an inter house heritage quiz competition. The quiz tested the students’ knowledge about their city through questions on famous personalities, places and other well-known and less known facts about Chennai.

Day three-Dr. Chitra Madhavan, the well-known historian and researcher on various topics like temple architecture, iconography and epigraphy, was invited to give a talk to our students. She spoke to an enraptured audience consisting of students of grades 6 & 7, about the Egmore Connemara Library, and its rich legacy. It was a very interesting and educative session, The interest of the students was evident in the question answer session, wherein she was bombarded by queries by the interested students on various aspects of Chennai architecture

Day four- saw a bharatnatyam dance performance by our students to showcase the tradition and its rich legacy through a classical dance.

Day five- The events culminated with the grand finale-an exhibition of pictures of famous personalities, places of attraction in Chennai and the artefacts unique to the city.

The whole week was filled with events that show cased the city, its history, traditions and culture.
