World Music Day, 2026

NPS International, Chennai, celebrated World Music Day on 22 June 2026 in the school auditorium with enthusiastic participation from students of Grades 6 to 12. The event was organised by the students of Grades 11 and 12 with the aim of fostering a deeper appreciation for music and providing younger students with an engaging platform to explore different musical concepts through interactive activities and live performances.

The celebration began with a welcome address that introduced the significance of World Music Day and highlighted the universal language of music and its ability to connect people across cultures and generations. Students then participated in an interactive quiz on the history of music. Each question was followed by a brief explanation, helping students learn about the evolution of music, different musical traditions, and the influence of music across various cultures and time periods.

The programme continued with a series of engaging activities designed to make learning both enjoyable and meaningful. Students enthusiastically took part in the "Guess the Metronome" challenge, which encouraged them to recognise different tempos and understand the importance of timing in music. This was followed by an interactive session on time signatures, where students explored how rhythm is organised in different musical pieces. Another popular segment, "Guess the Song," tested students' listening skills and musical knowledge, with participants responding enthusiastically throughout the activity.

The celebration also featured performances by senior students that added a special dimension to the programme. The Grade 11 students presented a group singing performance that showcased teamwork, coordination, and musical expression. This was followed by a solo performance by a Grade 12 student, whose confident stage presence and expressive rendition were warmly received by the audience. These performances not only entertained the students but also encouraged younger learners to appreciate the effort, practice, and discipline involved in musical performance.

Adding to the excitement, students enjoyed a captivating drum solo that demonstrated rhythm, technique, and musical expression. The programme concluded with an interactive polyrhythm activity, where students actively participated in creating and experiencing layered rhythmic patterns. Working together, they discovered how different rhythms can blend to create a unified musical experience, making the session both educational and enjoyable.

The event witnessed active participation from students across all grades and successfully promoted musical awareness, creativity, listening skills, collaboration, and confidence. More than a celebration, the programme provided students with opportunities to learn, perform, interact, and appreciate the many forms of music. The World Music Day celebration concluded on a memorable note, reinforcing the school's commitment to nurturing creativity and encouraging students to experience music as a powerful medium for expression, learning, and connection.
